Since she won her 4th trophy at Wimbledon last July, defending champion Serena Williams had an emotional comeback when she broke down in tears after overcoming French-Iranian Aravane Rezai 6-3, 3-6 and 6-1 in the first round.

Her victory tasted like no previous one for the 29-year-old former top seed who had been through a disastrous year. Serena was out of tennis courts following a foot injury and a severe pulmonary embolism that could have been fatal.
